Cheap Hotels in Yogyacarta, Indonesia

Heres a cheap hotel in the "Tourist District"...

Sleeping at the Airport in Bali...?

Serendipity Antiques...in Kuta Bali...

Serendipity Antiques in Poppies I in Kuta has real antiques for the discriminating buyer...who wants more than the T-Shirt Shops on Poppies have to offer...

Where to stay in Ubud, Bali....?

Apparently Ubud ...like Poppies in Kuta...operate on a first come first served basis...

Little is available on line for booking...which is understandable if you are renting rooms for under $15 US Dollars per night...

The main street has many cheaper losmans and small B&Bs...

The main street, Jl Raya and especially Monkey Forest Road are the traditional places to look for a low cost place to stay, but recently many new low and medium cost places have sprung up in Jl Hanoman and Jl Bima.

Checking out Poppies I and II...

Poppies is more chaotic than the rest of Bali...it would be unbearable...but its smaller...so the traffic is less...

Hot and Touristic...very Tropical...

Ajoins the beach area at the Hard Rock Cafe... Many touts and sellers of items... Can be a problem...if you buy from one they all want you to buy something...

Poppies has some cheaper ghest houses...but they are buried inside the alleys, gangs, and lanes...and side streets...often to narrow for vehicular traffic.... Many don't have internet booking... Best to call on the phone for reservations which can be cheaper than on Legian Street...or on the main touristic streets by the beach... Basically the closer you are to the beach the more expensive the room...

Poppies has a lot of bars and shops selling souvieniors ....but that gets tedious after a while...

Bali is an ACQUIRED TASTE...that Americans seldom seek out... its mostly Aussies...and perhaps some Europeans...but Americans are Rare...

Moved to Legian Street in Bali...

Left the lower Kuta area...for Legian Street .... But most of these streets are look the same.

Narrow ...lots of traffic...mostly motor bikes...with many vans... Everyone here is a "tour operator"...every car is for hire...

The crowd is decidedly "Eat Pray Love"...lots of over the hill Hippy types...some Aussie Surfer types and the girlfriends...and a lot of younger Lonely Planet types...

Really very much like Thailand...but on smaller scale...with very narrow streets...

The big resorts are all fabulous...but the street scene if full of touts...and tourists...

Plenty of bars and places to buy stuff... All a little run down...but passable...

On a steep learning curve...so all this may change with more experience....

Still not able to sign into my Yahoo email...for some reason...

Arrived in Bali...but can't sign in to my Yahoo email...?

Bali...or the Kuta area anyway ... is a town of court yards...and narrow streets... There is little consideration of the pedestrian... Narrow high walled extremely narrow streets will go on for hundreds of meters...without any breaks or even a "cut throughs"...

So walking can be risky...and take you far far out of your way... There are often dogs to contend with...if the motor bikes are not bad enough...

Bali is best done at the large gated and gaurded beach resorts...these are luxurious and verdant...and designed to impress...even if the surrounding area is rather run down and impossible to navigate on foot...

On the streets there are taxis and touts all over. Some are even genuinely helpful... after all this is their home...!

The Beach is "accessed" via the resorts...not through a public road or path...this may be designed to control traffic on the beach...which of course is beautiful...

The gangs or alleyways are full of small hotels and "losmens"...which are much cheaper than the main beach front resorts...but the facilities of the resorts are available on a walkin basis...so anyone can use them within limits...and photography is allowed...

The best way to see Bali is by private car...or small tour bus... Cars cost about $40 per day for all day...including gas... So perhaps a good deal...

There are convenience stores every few blocks for snacks and water...These are very western looking...and amid the other local businesses they stand out...

I saw a couple with kids trying to venture outside a big resort today...and I thought ...They just got here...! The Streets of Bali are no place for kids...there simply is no place to walk...and the traffic ( on the "wrong side" of the street ) is constant...

So that is my immediate "take" on Bali...I'll be moving around a bit...and going to the hinterland later...
